Abstract

The doctrine of the foundation by Carl Schmitt possesses a complex nature, which is particularly compounded by the centrality of political theology in his thought system. The importance of addressing Schmitt's doctrine of the foundation lies in the fact that understanding his political theology and the concept of the political remains incomplete without grasping his fundamental orientation in the doctrine of the foundation. Understanding this doctrine sheds light on Schmitt's entire project and can serve as a basis for evaluating the role that the theological element plays in it. The question arises whether Schmitt's reliance on a theological reading of the doctrine of the foundation and the concept of the political stems from a transcendent orientation on his part. Does the purely theological nature of Schmitt's arguments in defense of the doctrine of the foundation and the concept of the political, which are closely linked, imply a transcendent position? Reflecting on the nuances of Schmitt's reasoning in presenting the doctrine of the foundation and understanding its close ties with political theology reveals that Schmitt's position, ultimately, despite its reliance on a theological reading, is immanent and non-transcendent. Here, we aim to substantiate this claim by comparing Schmitt's position with that of Arendt on one side and the Voegelin and Strauss on the other.
